Abstract

The Cherenkov water detector (CWD) of the TAIGA-100 experiment, which is now being developed, is a cylindrical concrete tank buried in the soil and filled with purified water. The inner surface of the water volume is a light-insulated “bag” with high coefficient of diffuse reflection. The water tank is located under a thick layer of soil to absorb the EAS electron-photon and hadron components. At the top of the detector, the photomultiplier with a hemispherical photocathode is installed. To study the characteristics of the CWD, its model was developed using the Geant4 software package, and the particle detection by the CWD was simulated. To successfully put the detector into operation, it is necessary to determine the lifetime of photons in the CWD, the detector’s response to muons, gammas and hadrons, and to determine the rejection coefficient of gamma and hadron events in the CWD. For this purpose, a detector model was developed in the Geant4 software package and particle registration by the detector was simulated.
